Pumpkin

It’s still Halloween on this coast (for a few more minutes, at least), so here’s my entry in the office pumpkin carving contest. Oh dear…

Your horoscope

A non-zodaic-specific horoscope for you today (courtesy of Andy Zaltzman):

With the moon once again aligned with bits of the sky and the sun pointing outwards, with Jupiter in one of its gassy phases, you could be set to drink a cup of tea or other liquid at some point next week, while someone you know fails to tell you about something they didn’t think was really worth bothering you with. Be careful not to eat poisonous berries or jump into a crocodile pit at your local zoo – with Pluto still further away than Mars, and Saturn as big as it normally is, that will only end badly.

The Eclipse of the Century – a retrospective

Diamond ring - solar eclipse
As of the date of posting, (September 25, 2018), the “Great American Eclipse” was 400 days ago on August 21, 2017. Why 400 days instead of a year? Well, 400 is just a much nicer number than 365 (actually, it’s 365 and a quarter days (actually actually, it’s 365.2422 days (actually actually actually… yeah, I just didn’t get this ready in time for the one-year anniversary))).

Solid Brass (somewhat) recently played as part of a high school concert – good way to get our name out there, and nice outreach to students. The director asked me to send him some copy to put into the program. I sent him back a bulleted list of all the things he might want to include. The concert day comes, and I get a look at the program…

New recordings, new RSS feed!

I’ve posted several new recordings up from Solid Brass and Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band on the Recordings page.
I’ve also added a couple of those to the Featured Recordings page.

Speaking of, I’ve now set up an RSS feed for the Featured page! You can use the RSS reader or podcast player of your choice to get all new songs as they’re posted.
The feed address is https://wolfacoustics.com/feed/podcast. You should be able to add a new podcast to any player with the address/RSS feed/custom option. If you have any questions about how to set it up, send me an email ([email protected]) and I’ll see if I can help you out.

Clouds over Colorado

I was back in Colorado for Christmas last year, and caught a few really neat cloud formations. As best I can determine, they’re lenticular clouds. Whatever they are, they are awesome.

The Wayback Machine

One of the most useful websites I’ve found over the years is also one of the least known. In the interest of spreading knowledge, I wanted devote this entry to the Wayback Machine, which is run by the nonprofit Internet Archive. Basically, they are trying to keep an archive of the entire internet.

https://web.archive.org/

If a website is taken offline, or if the web owner changes something, there’s a good chance that the old version was saved by the Wayback Machine. This has saved my bacon a few times. It’s also just generally useful. For instance, the old Soundstage Rhythm Orchestra website that I used to run is gone, but you can still access the archived version of it – that’s what is linked from my Ensembles page.

Of course, it’s not a perfect archive. Some sites slip under the radar, and they don’t always catch embedded documents or files. It will load a lot slower than the original site. Also, if something is in a password-protected area, it won’t get caught. But if you’re ever trying to find something that seems to have disappeared from the web, the Wayback Machine is a good place to start.

S’more Balls

I’ve been playing around in the kitchen a bit (though I gladly concede the title of best cook in the family to my sister). Trawling around the web, I came across a recipe for chocolate-covered s’more balls (or reindeer balls if you’re feeling dirty 😉 ). After making some adjustments to the original recipe, I’ve brought these in to the office several times and they’ve been a big hit.
